The major drought for Rory McIlroy continues.
He had a chance to win the U.S. Open, but after he bogeyed the final hole, Bryson DeChambeau escaped the 18th with a par — hitting his third shot out of the bunker within feet of the hole — to win the tournament at 6-under.
McIlroy and DeChambeau battled back and forth during the course of the tournament’s final day at Pinehurst No. 2.
McIlroy hasn’t won a major in 10 years, since he was victorious in both the PGA Championship and the British Open in 2014.
The victory gave DeChambeau the second major title of his career.
“When I do finally win this next major, it’s going to be really, really sweet,” McIlroy said after last year’s US Open. “I would go through 100 Sundays like this to get my hands on another major championship.”
While McIlroy is one of the sport’s biggest names, his personal life has created some of the bigger headlines recently.
The first being the divorce from Erica Stoll in May and then news that the golf superstar had filed a notice of voluntary dismissal in the case.
At the time of the filing, the marriage was described as “irretrievably broken.”
However, earlier this week, McIlroy said that the couple had “resolved our differences.”
“Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together,” he said.
The couple has been married for seven years and share a 3-year-old daughter, Poppy.
