NextImg:Browns keep making trades as they land Tyson Campbell from Jaguars in surprising swap

NFL teams aren’t waiting for the trade deadline to be wheelin’ and dealin’.

With still a month to go until the trade deadline, teams have continued to make serious trades each week, with the Browns and Jaguars swapping cornerbacks in a rather surprising trade Wednesday.

The Jaguars, whose defense already leads the league in takeaways, traded cornerback Tyson Campbell and a seventh-round pick to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Greg Newsome and a sixth-round pick, the teams announced.

It is the second trade in as many days for Cleveland, which shipped veteran quarterback Joe Flacco to the rival Bengals for a sixth-round pick Tuesday.

The cornerback swap offloads tons of future salary considerations for the Jaguars, as Campbell is in year two of his massive four-year $76.5 million contract.

It also perhaps gives Jacksonville a better scheme fit for defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile.

These two are both highly regarded players at the position, as Campbell is the 12th-highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, averaging $19.1 million per year, ahead of the likes of Giants defensive back Paulson Adebo, who just signed a big contract this past offseason.

Newsome, who is in his final year of his rookie deal and is surely expecting a big contract extension this offseason, is rated the No. 40 cornerback by Pro Football Focus, while Campbell comes in at No. 71.

“Love Cleveland, it’s been real,” Newsome said in an X post as he bid his team farewell.

“DUUUUUVALLLL,” he added in a separate post celebrating the move.

He now joins a team that is in first place in the AFC South after previously being on a last-place team.

The Jaguars just flexed their defensive muscle that helped lead them to a shocking defeat of the Chiefs on “Monday Night Football” — including Devin Lloyd’s 99-yard pick-six of Patrick Mahomes.

Team have generally been more active this year ahead of the deadline, as the Ravens recently dealt defensive star Odafe Oweh and a seventh-round pick to the Chargers for a fifth-round pick and safety Alohi Gilman.

The Browns, who just lost to the Vikings in London on Sunday, will face the Steelers in Week 6, while Jacksonville is set for a road date with the Seahawks.
