NextImg:Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez calls for antisemitism probe after Post report on aide’s alleged abusive behavior

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez vowed Wednesday to probe antisemitism in his office to promote more diversity in the wake of explosive discrimination complaints by his staff against a top aide.

“Listening to concerns raised recently, it is clear that I as district attorney, and we as an office, need to do more,” Gonzalez wrote in a memo to staff — three days after The Post reported incendiary allegations against aide Maritza Ming.

Staffers who wanted to file discrimination complaints about Ming told The Post they feared doing so because Equal Employment Opportunity officers reported to her. Records show Ming was involved in handling EEO cases, posing a conflict of interest.

“There have been concerns expressed regarding our EEO  procedures, and change is needed to address them,” Gonzalez wrote.

His memo, obtained by The Post Wednesday, came on the heels of a virtual meeting among dozens of Jewish employees on Monday to address the bombshell allegations.

Last week, Gonzalez’s spokesman Oren Yaniv denied accusations that Ming refused to let a Jewish breast-feeding bureau chief do her job remotely during the COVID shutdown.

Staffers said Ming called Jewish co-workers “privileged” and expressed the opinion the office had too many Jewish bosses.

Gonzalez also said he has asked city investigators to review allegations reported in The Post.

“When these independent reviews are complete, I will take any action warranted by the findings,” he said.

In his memo, Gonzalez said, “I have no tolerance for antisemitism, or any other form of bigotry or discrimination in this office. Every report of misconduct is troubling to me.”

To restore trust in the complaint process, he said, “We will be bringing in an expert consultant to review our processes and procedures, to recommend improvements, and to lead additional training for all managers. I will ensure that when the office is restructured, the EEO officer reports directly to me, and has no other supervisory responsibilities that can create the appearance of conflicts.”

Some staffers were disappointed that Gonzalez’ response did not address complaints that Ming had been abusive and retaliatory as his chief of staff, did not properly account for her work time, and used staff and city cars for her own benefit.

Last month, he promoted her to “confidential executive ADA,” making $210,000 a year.

“It’s just him trying to punt the issue and make it not his responsibility to deal with her, while keeping her on staff and paid,” one said.
