Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin vowed to support LeBron James and his family after the Lakers superstar’s 18-year-old son, Bronny, suffered cardiac arrest during a basketball workout at USC on Monday.
Hamlin shared his support in a post on Twitter nearly seven months after he suffered cardiac arrest on the field at Paycor stadium during a game against the Bengals on Jan. 2.
“Prayers to Bronny & The James family as well,” Hamlin wrote, adding a folded hands emoji. “Here for you guys just like you have been for me my entire process.”
When one Twitter user wrote, “Defibrillators at EVERY practice, high school on up,” Hamlin responded with: “We been on that mission..”
The James family confirmed the medical emergency in a statement to TMZ on Tuesday.
“Medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital,” a James family spokesperson said. “He is now in stable condition and no longer in ICU.”
According to TMZ, Bronny was unconscious before he was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Bronny — a 6-foot-3 combo guard, who’s entering his freshman year at USC — was rushed to the hospital after a 911 call was made at 9:26 AM from the Galen Center, where USC practices.
A 911 dispatcher can also be heard saying “unconscious” in audio obtained by the outlet.
It is unclear what led to Bronny suffering cardiac arrest.
Since his cardiac arrest, Hamlin has returned to the Bills and is dedicated to charitable efforts and helping improve medical equipment and attention for athletes.
During the Jan. 2 game between the Bills and Bengals, Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during the first quarter after a tackle by Cincinnati wideout Tee Higgins — and was resuscitated on the field and rushed to the hospital.
The then-24-year-old was in the ICU and on a ventilator for days before he woke up from a medically induced coma.
Bronny announced his commitment to play for the Trojans next season in a May Instagram post, which came a few weeks after he graduated from Sierra Canyon High School.
James and his wife Savannah asked for privacy in the wake of their oldest son’s health scare.
“LeBron and Savannah wish to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes,” the statement said.
“We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and we will update media when there is more information.”
The couple also share son Bryce, 18, and daughter Zhuri, 8.
Bronny, who turns 19 in October, becomes draft-eligible in 2024.
