Apparently, Randy Gregory was never cut all along.
Reports surfaced earlier this week that the veteran pass rusher, who signed a five-year deal worth $70 million with the Denver Broncos prior to last season, was released.
Instead, the 30-year-old was traded to the undefeated San Francisco 49ers, which is probably the exact opposite.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Broncos moved Gregory and a seventh-round selection in 2024 for a sixth-round pick in the same draft.
Per Denver7, Gregory had wanted a change of scenery from the now 1-3 Broncos, and he’s getting what he wanted.
Schefter, in a Tweet, notes that the Broncos will pay Gregory about $10 million for the rest of the 2023 season, whereas the 49ers will only pay Gregory a veteran minimum salary.
Gregory maintains all three years left on his contract, though none of it is guaranteed following the season, making this a low-risk deal for the 49ers.
Gregory was initially drafted No. 60 overall (as a second-round pick) in 2015 out of Nebraska by the Dallas Cowboys, where he played the first six seasons of his career.
The 6-foot-5 hybrid defender, who has been listed as both a defensive end and an outside linebacker, has piled up 19.5 career sacks and 10 forced fumbles across 60 games, in a career impacted by injuries.
This season with the Broncos, Gregory has recorded one sack, one of just three he’s had since leaving Dallas.
Gregory also has two tackles for loss this season.
