Dalvin Cook’s market is not exactly shaping up the way he might have hoped since he became a free agent.
Since Cook was officially released by the Vikings on Friday, it was reported that the Broncos are not too interested in Cook despite Denver being initially considered a likely landing spot for the four-time Pro Bowler.
9 News Denver reported that the Broncos “do not appear to be in” on Cook, despite the team’s running back room looking thin.
Apart from starter Javonte Williams, who is coming off a torn ACL and may not be ready for Week 1, the Broncos’ depth chart consists of free-agent signing Samaje Perine, Tony Jones Jr., Tony Badie and Jaleel McLaughlin.
Still, the team doesn’t appear interested in the 27-year-old Cook, who is coming off his fourth straight 1,000-yard rushing season with the Vikings.
Perhaps it could be that they are not interested in him at his asking price, which is said to be steep.
NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported that Cook is looking for a “significant contract” as he hopes to find the second NFL home of his career.
That may be a lot to ask for a running back who will be 28 by the time Week 1 comes around, the age at which many at the position historically hit a production wall and start to decline.
Recent NFL trends have teams shifting away from paying running backs big contracts in general, but especially ones getting closer to their 30s.
So, while Cook may want a big deal, he may not find one on the open market.
The former Florida State standout had another solid year in 2022, rushing for 1,173 yards and eight touchdowns while adding 295 yards receiving.
However, he did post his lowest yards-per-carry number of his career (4.4 YPC).
Perhaps that’s why Minnesota decided to cut bait, along with the $9 million of cap relief they gained.
Cook is still a talented player and is all but guaranteed to land somewhere, just maybe not at the price tag he is hoping for.
Jets coach Robert Saleh said the team would “turn the stones over” on Cook, as they too have a star running back coming off a torn ACL in Breece Hall.
