NextImg:Brock Purdy’s disastrous day leaves 49ers reeling with third straight loss

It was far from a Brock Party for the 49ers or their starting quarterback.

Brock Purdy turned the ball over three times as San Francisco dropped its third consecutive game in a 31-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The tough day for the Niners QB did see him throw 22 completions for 365 yards, but it was the mistakes that proved to be too costly.

It started in the closing seconds of the third quarter as the 49ers marched from their own 24-yard line to the Bengals’ eight.

Purdy scrambled and tried to dump the ball off to Elijah Mitchell but had it picked off by Germaine Pratt.

The play was even more devastating since the Niners trailed 17-10 and a touchdown would have given them a chance to tie the game with the extra point.

Purdy’s mistakes didn’t end there because, on the very next possession for San Francisco, he threw another interception. This time, he threw the pick on the first play of the drive as he tried to look for Brandon Aiyuk in the middle of the field but instead found Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson.

The interception gave the Bengals great field possession and they turned that into a touchdown to extend their lead to 24-10.

Later in the fourth quarter, Purdy was sacked and coughed up the ball with under two minutes to play and the Niners were down 31-17.

It was a bit of a surprise that Purdy ended up playing in this week’s game, considering he had been going through concussion protocol earlier in the week. There had been an expectation that Sam Darnold could get the start when Kyle Shanahan revealed the news to reporters.

Purdy appeared to get clipped by Vikings linebacker Jordan Hicks in Week 7 as he attempted to go over the pile, and a replay showed the signal-caller’s head flinging back after getting tackled.

But Purdy quickly cleared the NFL’s concussion protocols in order to play on Sunday.

There was a cause for some concern in the loss to Cincinnati when Purdy got hit hard late in the fourth quarter.  Purdy was taken to the ground and his head appeared to bounce off the turf.

It also looked like he grabbed his head momentarily.

The 49ers have a bye week next week before returning to the field to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10.

San Francisco is 5-3 through the first eight weeks of the season.
