Glen Powell‘s new football series Chad Powers kicked off with a major cameo from the only internet celebrity who could manage to outshine the Top Gun star himself: Haliey Welch, aka the “Hawk Tuah Girl.”

But her surprise appearance sparked a debate online after comedian Brittney Rae Carrera claimed she was unexpectedly replaced by Welch, having only found out while watching the premiere episode with her friends.

The scene in question happens soon after we’re introduced to Powell’s Russ Holliday eight years after he ruined his football career. The disgraced QB meets Welch in a nightclub, where he, of course, references her iconic phrase, “Spit on that thang!”

Carrera shared a video on her social media that showed her and her friends excitedly waiting for her appearance in the nightclub scene. But when Welch appeared instead, Carrera could not contain her emotional reaction: “THEY REPLACED ME WITH HAWK TUAH?!”

DECIDER’s Nicole Gallucci thoroughly investigated whether this was an elaborate bit, but it looks like this crash out – and its resolution – were very real.

Carrera and Welch have both since spoken out, with Welch clarifying that she was not aware that the role had already been cast when she was approached for the series.

“I am not upset with Hailey Welch at all,” Carrera wrote in a statement made on her Instagram Story. “I hope one day she will teach me how to spit on that thang.”

Welch explained that she has since spoken with Carrera and made amends.

“Hey guys, I’ve been tagged in a lot of videos of @brittneyraeallday saying I “replaced her” in Chad Powers. I’ve been in contact with her and we’re cool,” she wrote on her Instagram Story.

“I wasn’t aware the role had been filled prior,” Welch explained. “It was as simple as this: I was called and asked to be in a tv series with Glen Powell and I said yes (bc duh it’s Glen Powell) I wasn’t made aware this was happening and it was in no way malicious at all. I actually love her content and think she is a funny and sweet girl.”

Considering Welch’s Chad Powers character makes it clear she never wants to see Russ Holliday again in, it’s likely fans will not get another glimpse of the social media icon again.

New episodes of Chad Powers air Tuesdays on Hulu.
