British motorcycle speedway star Charles Wright is in the hospital after a disastrous crash during a race last weekend.

Wright, competing for the team Sparta Wroclaw in Poland, lost total control of his motorcycle after his front tire clipped an opponent’s back tire, and he went flying into the barrier in a terrifying moment, British speedway’s site reported this week.

The racer, who won the Premier League four-team championship in 2014, is in stable condition at a Wroclaw hospital but is in considerable pain and is struggling to move, according to a GoFundMe page.

“Charles is currently in hospital in Wrocław and underwent surgery on his collarbone on Monday morning. He also sustained multiple vertebrae and rib fractures, neck, chest and arm damage. Although stable, Charles is in a lot of pain and isn’t very mobile,” the GoFundMe for Wright read.

Wright also won the individual British championship in 2019 after he won the final race at National Speedway Stadium in Manchester.

Last season, he won the SGB Premiership trophy as a member of the Belle Vue Aces.

Wright was posting impressive results this season, winning the SGB Rider’s Championship at his home track at Ecco Arena in August.

“It is a very sad and abrupt end to Charles’ season, he was in incredible form, proven by his results on home soil and by the opportunity given to him by Sparta Wrocław,” the Facebook post read.

“Thank you to everyone who has messaged, called and sent well wishes.

“Recovery will be arduous but Charles is one incredible, tenacious and determined human on all fronts and he’s got this too.”
