HOYLAKE, England — Come and get me.
That felt like the theme of the day presented by Brian Harman, who played his British Open second round like he was trying to run away and hide from the rest of the field.
Harman, the 36-year-old lefty from Georgia, played a flawless round on Friday at Royal Liverpool, delivering a 6-under-par 65 to get to 10-under par through 36 holes.
When Harman walked off the golf course at about 2 p.m. local time, he had a five-shot lead over 18-hole co-leader Tommy Fleetwood, who hadn’t even begun his second round yet.
Harman’s second round included four birdies — all on the front nine — and an eagle on the par-5 18th to close his day.
He’s made only one bogey in 35 holes, which is an accomplishment on a golf course with 82 bunkers, some of which are so penal they’re like water hazards.
Harman, who shot a 4-under-par 67 in Thursday’s opening round and began the day one shot off the lead, got hot early Friday with birdies on Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 to seize the lead.
He then parred the next 12 holes before reaching the par-5 18th in two and carding his eagle.
Harman, who stands at just 5-foot-7 and is 155 pounds and has just two wins in 339 PGA Tour events is easy to overlook.
However, he’s been playing well — and has played well at the British Open, at which he’s finished in the top-20 in each of the previous two years.
He, too, entered the week having been in the top-12 in each of his last three starts.
His best result in the British Open was a tie for sixth last year, his best Masters finish is a tie for 12th in 2021, his best in the U.S. Open a tie for second in 2017 and his best at the PGA Championship was a tie for 13th in 2017.
He’s played in 29 majors before this week and has one runner-up, one top-5, two top-10s and made the cut in 16 of them.
