It’s what Brian Daboll didn’t say about the Giants’ backup quarterback job that raises possibilities for Jaxson Dart.
While reaffirming for the umpteenth time that Russell Wilson is the starter, the Giants head coach did no such thing when asked if the No. 2 quarterback is set in stone.
“We’re going to go out here and practice and the guys are going to compete,” Daboll said Wednesday as training camp got underway. “The roster will be set when the roster is set.”
In other words, the door is open for the rookie Dart to outplay Jameis Winston over the summer and move that much closer to nipping at Wilson’s heels once the regular season starts.
Winston signed with the Giants with an understanding that Wilson could subsequently be added as the starter. Daboll anointed Wilson the starter before OTAs even began.

The real quarterback competition now becomes to see who is one snap away from the field. Unlike the one-year rental Wilson, Winston is on a two-year contract and was chosen in part to mentor a youngster.
Winston was the second quarterback up Wednesday in 7 on 7 drills.
The Giants also have fan favorite Tommy DeVito, who is 3-5 as a starter over the last two seasons, in the quarterback room.
“These guys will be out here competing but Russ is our starter,” Daboll said.
