NextImg:Brian Cox backtracks on Meghan, Harry comments: ‘I think they’re victims’

Brian Cox has done a 180 and insists his comments about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were “taken out of context.”

Earlier this month, the “Succession” star claimed Markle “knew what she was getting into” by marrying Harry, and insisted she “clearly” had “ambitions” of joining the royal family before tying the knot in 2018.

Now, the actor has backtracked, telling Radio Times he actually has “enormous sympathy” for the exiled royals.

“I’m a bit angry about that because that whole thing has been taken out of context,” the 76-year-old told the outlet. “I actually have enormous sympathy for them.”

Cox said that Markle was tempted into a fairytale that turned out to have an unhappy ending.

“They’re the product of an institution which is moribund and shouldn’t exist anymore,” he continued.

“But that’s a difficult situation where [Meghan] comes from, and it’s understandable that she sees something [appealing] – and it does look like a fairy tale. But it was a fairytale that went horribly wrong.”

“I think they’re victims,” he added of the Sussexes.

Earlier this month, Cox said in a Haute Living New York interview, that Markle had “the childhood dreams of marrying Prince Charming and all that s–t we see as fantasy that could be our lives in our dreams.”

Cox said that Markle, 41, shouldn’t be surprised by the aftermath of her and husband Harry’s sensational exit from the royal family.

“You can’t go into a system where somebody’s already been trained to behave in a certain kind of way and then just expect them to cut themselves off,” he explained.

“I mean, she knew what she was getting into.”

Later in the interview, the Emmy winner said he would like to see the UK “move on” from the monarchy altogether.

“In my opinion, we shouldn’t have a monarchy,” he said. “It’s not viable; it doesn’t make any sense. F–k it.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have continued to add duel to the fire by airing out their dirty laundry in a series of lucrative deals, including their “Harry & Meghan” Netflix docuseries, and Harry’s protocol-shattering “Spare” memoir.

In the respective projects, the pair spoke candidly about what they experienced “behind closed doors” before leaving Britain.

The pair now reside in their $14 million Montecito, Calif. mansion with 3-year-old Archie and daughter Lilibet, 1.
