The Mitchells are talking things out.
After Garrett Mitchell hit a walk-off bomb against Adam Ottavino to give the Brewers a 7-6 win over the Mets and a sweep of the three-game series on Wednesday afternoon in Milwaukee, the 24-year-old presented an unconventional reason for his sweet swing.
“When my wife doesn’t show up to the games, usually something good happens,” Mitchell told Bally Sports Wisconsin after the game.
“Going into that at-bat I was like, well, she’s not here, so I might as well do something fun!”
After the video circulated on social media, his wife, 24-year-old Haley Cruse Mitchell, a former college softball star, had a laugh about the whole thing.
“You won’t say it to my face tho,” she responded on Twitter.
She sent a separate tweet with a photo of a disguise from the movie “Mean Girls,” in which she joked, “Me trying to sneak into Am Fam Field on Friday after my husband said he plays better when I’m not there on live television.”
Garrett Mitchell was called up to the Brewers last August, and is part of a youth movement on the team that also includes Owen Miller, Brice Turang and Joey Wiemer, who have all helped propel Milwaukee to a 5-1 start.
Haley Cruse Mitchell played softball at Oregon where she twice appeared in the Women’s College World Series and in 2021 was first-team all Pac-12.
After the game Wednesday, Garrett Mitchell was matter-of-fact about the pitch from Ottavino that he drilled for a walk-off homer.
“He left it over the plate and gave me a chance to hit it,” Mitchell said.

Ottavino, meanwhile, expressed optimism for the future despite the Mets 3-4 start.
“You are always going to be frustrated – nobody likes to lose whether it’s April or August or whatever,” the pitcher said after the game. “But overall it’s still early obviously and we have got a lot of baseball to play and we have got to start putting our best foot forward here.”
