As the Mets’ offense continues its slow start to the season, the team’s potential future stars in Triple-A couldn’t be hotter.
Ronny Mauricio, Mark Vientos and Brett Baty all homered in the Syracuse Mets’ 9-7 loss to the RailRiders on Tuesday.
While the Mets’ future put on a power show, the big club managed just two runs on five hits — none for extra bases and went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position in a 4-1 loss to the Padres at Citi Field.
The Mets (6-6) have scored two runs or less in five of their six losses, and their .218 team batting average is the worst in the NL
Third baseman Eduardo Escobar has been the most glaring example of their offensive struggles.
Top prospect Francisco Alvarez has just one hit in the two games he’s played and struck out with runners on second and third to end things on Tuesday night.
But hitting hasn’t been a problem so far for their other three top position-player prospects.
Mauricio’s second-inning, no-doubt blast to right was his fourth in 10 games.
The MVP of Winter Ball in the Dominican Republic is hitting .361 with a 1.245 OPS and 10 RBIs over 36 at-bats.
Vientos, who saw time with the Mets late season, hit his third homer of the season in the sixth inning on Tuesday.
He is hitting .333 with a 1.057 OPS with six RBIs in 33 at-bats.
Baty, who missed some time with a hand injury already this season, provided the capper with a solo shot to dead center in the ninth — his third hit of the day.
The Mets’ potential third baseman of the future, who had a cameo in the bigs in 2022, is hitting a sizzling .391, with three homers, seven RBIs and a 1.351 OPS in 23 at-bats.
All of it is a very small sample size, but it’s at least fair to say Mauricio, Baty and Vientos have continued to makes noise.
