The Mandalorian

Powered by Reelgood

You truly never know who’s gonna show up on The Mandalorian. Everyone in their galaxy and ours is fair game for a cameo, from Luke Skywalker to Lizzo. That also includes actors from other major franchises — even actors from the franchises that you don’t really associate with Star Wars or even fantasy/science fiction. SPOILERS ahead, because this week’s episode of The Mandalorian got another visit from the Gilliverse.

The Gilliverse is, as I just Googled and found out, what people apparently call the shared cinematic universe inhabited by the characters of Breaking Bad, which was created by Vince Gilligan. The Mandalorian has counted a major player from the Gilliverse as a member of its cast since Season 1: Giancarlo Esposito, who’s scored Emmy nominations for portraying Moff Gideon. Now Esposito is joined by another beloved part of the Breaking Bad cast: Charles Baker, a.k.a. Skinny Pete.

If you’ve watched Breaking Bad, you’re not asking this question. You know that Skinny Pete is a buddy of Jesse Pinkman’s (Aaron Paul) and a low-level meth dealer. He’s always paired with Jesse’s other friend, Badger (Matt Jones). They’re fan-favorite characters, often providing much-needed comedic relief on one of the most intense dramas that has ever been aired on TV. And now Skinny Pete is a legit part of Star Wars!

Okay — should probably stop calling him “Skinny Pete.” The actor’s name is Charles Baker, and he has the pretty badass honor of paying a Mandalorian on The Mandalorian.

Baker’s character remains unnamed; he’s referred to as Survivor Scout in the credits, and that’s a pretty apt description of his character so far. Unlike Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) and her fleet, or Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his religious sect, Baker’s character is one of the few Mandalorians who survived the Night of 1000 Tears and the Great Purge that scoured the surface of their home planet Mandalore and left most of the population dead. Baker, along with a character credited as Survivor Captain played by Charles Parnell, encounters the combined fleet/sect during their reconnaissance mission to Mandalore’s surface.

We don’t know how big a role Skinny Pete’s Mandalorian will have in next week’s Season 3 finale, but if The Mando Currently Known as Survivor Scout is anything like Pete, he can survive literally anything thrown his way. And who knows — maybe eventually we’ll get to know more about this new character, perhaps in a spinoff called El Kamino: A Breaking Beskar Movie. I’m not apologizing for that pun. Camino, Kamino, it’s right there.

The Mandalorian Season 3 finale premieres on Wednesday, April 19 on Disney+.
