It’s only May, but the Mets and Braves are going in very different directions.
Atlanta used a pair of three-run homers by Sean Murphy to outlast the Mets, 9-8, in the opener of Monday’s doubleheader at Citi Field.

It was the Mets’ sixth loss in seven games, while the Braves have won five of six to open a four-game lead in the NL East.
The Mets fell behind early by five runs and got back in the game, but never tied it.
Eduardo Escobar’s pinch-hit solo homer off lefty A.J. Minter got the Mets to within a run and Brett Baty followed with a shot to right, but it was right at Ronald Acuna Jr. to end the game.
Denyi Reyes allowed a three-run homer to Murphy with one out in the top of the first, a 31-pitch inning.

The Mets answered with three straight baserunners to open the bottom of the inning against Spencer Strider, who hadn’t allowed a run in his previous two starts, covering 14 innings.
But after Brandon Nimmo opened the inning with a triple, Starling Marte walked and Francisco Lindor delivered an RBI single, Pete Alonso struck out and Jeff McNeil popped out.
Daniel Vogelbach walked to load the bases for Baty, which led to a mound visit from Atlanta pitching coach Rick Kranitz.

Baty whiffed to end the 36-pitch frame.
Atlanta continued to pour it on in the second with a two-run homer from Kevin Pillar that ended Reyes’ day.
John Curtiss came in and was greeted by a mammoth homer into the upper deck in left by Acuna Jr. that was measured at 448 feet to make it 6-1.
But the Mets got back into the game in the bottom of the third, as Marte led off with a single and Lindor walked before Alonso hit his 11th homer of the season, a three-run shot that cut the deficit to 6-4.

McNeil reached on a hit by pitch on a 1-2 pitch and Vogelbach singled to center on a ball misplayed by Michael Harris II.
With runners on the corners, Baty popped out, Luis Guillorme struck out and Tomas Nido grounded out and the Mets stranded two.
Strider retired the final nine batters he faced in his 107-pitch outing.
A laser home run over the Mets bullpen in right-center by Baty to lead off the bottom of the sixth against Dylan Lee made it 6-5.
It was Baty’s first career homer off a left-hander and came against Lee, who is typically excellent against lefty hitters.
Acuna doubled to open the seventh after Marte took a bad route to a ball in right-center.

The inning got worse for the Mets after Matt Olson walked and Murphy hit his second three-run homer of the afternoon for a 9-5 Atlanta lead.
The Mets weren’t done, as they loaded the bases with no one out in the seventh and scored two runs on Vogelbach’s grounder to first, when shortstop Vaughn Grissom threw the ball away trying to complete a double play.
But the rally ended there.
