NextImg:Brandon Staley will need a ‘miracle’ to keep Chargers job

Brandon Staley’s future with the Los Angeles Chargers looks bleak.

The Chargers coach is set to be fired at the end of the season unless some sort of miracle happens, according to Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz.

“Brandon Staley, barring a miracle, is out with the Los Angeles Chargers,” Schultz said Monday following the Chargers’ 20-10 home loss to the Baltimore Ravens. “And the reason is they have not had sustained regular season success, they’ve only been to one playoff game in three plus years.”

“There was a catastrophic loss to the Jaguars,” Schultz said, referring when the Chargers blew a 27-point lead in their 31-30 loss to the Jaguars in the wild-card round in January.

“Their defense is consistently in the bottom half or in this case, this season, bottom-five across every major including total defense, which is dead last.”

The news came after the Chargers’ third straight loss to the Ravens on Sunday dropped them to 4-7, placing them at the bottom of the AFC West.

The news also followed Frank Reich’s firing by the Carolina Panthers on Nov. 27.

This season, the Chargers are No. 31 in total yards allowed (393.2 per game), last in first downs allowed (22.8), No. 31 in passing yards allowed (291 per game) and No. 24 in points allowed (24 per game).

Staley, 40, is in the third season of a four-year contract, reportedly earning $4 million annually.

Staley remained confident after Sunday’s loss when asked if he believes his messaging is still resonating with his team.

“Yeah, otherwise you’d get blown out of the stadium in one of these games … and that hasn’t happened,” he said in his postgame press conference.

The 40-year-old coach reportedly has six games left to prove he’s worth keeping at the helm, and the first is this Sunday when Chargers visit the 2-9 Patriots.
