Charlotte Hornets first-round pick Brandon Miller is well aware of the boos he got from fans after he was selected No. 2 overall.
And he responded to them during an interview with a local Charlotte sports program.
“To the ones who are booing, I’ll just let you know we’re gonna get a lot of wins this year, definitely,” Miller told Charlotte Sports Live. “We’re gonna try to hold up that big trophy at the end. I’m just gonna have a lot of winners around me.”
Scenes inside the Spectrum Center and a nearby fan-led viewing party showed a rather sour reaction when the Hornets selected the Alabama forward.
Fans booed and gave the thumbs-down sign at the team’s home arena and a deflated “No” emanated from supporters of the Hornets when they saw Adam Silver announce the selection while watching on TV at Pinhouse.
Miller referencing the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy marked the second time since he was picked that he mentioned it in a media interview.
He made a bold prediction in an interview the night he was drafted at Barclays Center.
“I see the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA Finals next year. Hopefully, we’ll get that big trophy at the end,” Miller said to WCNC’s Ashley Stroehlein.
“My message to Charlotte Hornets fans would be that y’all will see us at the end of the year holding that big trophy up,” Miller later said.
Point guard Scoot Henderson had been the player Hornets fans had their eye on and Portland ended up selecting Henderson with the No. 3 overall pick.
MIller comes to the Hornets with a bit of baggage after he was connected to a murder case that involved former teammate Darius Miles.
Miller was never charged or suspended over the incident.
The 20-year-old forward will have a bit of a chip on his shoulder when he plays in his first NBA season, and no shortage of motivation.
