NextImg:‘Boy math’ explained: How viral response to ‘girl math’ takes down delusional men

You know “girl math” — now it’s time to learn “boy math.”

The girl version of the trend went viral when women on TikTok started sharing what they like to call “girl math,” or rather, their ways of justifying spending money.

For example, if something is less than $5, that something is actually free, according to girl math. If you buy a concert ticket in September, it’s free by the time the concert comes around in March.

The trend took off in August, and the hashtag #girlmath on TikTok has 506.3 million views as of Thursday morning.

Now, people are bringing “boy math” into the equation — and the hashtag #boymath already has amassed 27.8 million views.

However, “boy math” doesn’t necessarily revolve around financial decisions or how they spend their money. Rather, it’s mainly based on jokes about men’s weird habits and attitudes or their hypocrisy.

According to the database Know Your Meme, “boy math” can be dated back to mid-August, but the trend really gained popularity in mid-September with one particular post on X, formerly Twitter, gaining over 3,400 retweets and 14,000 likes in just one day.

Some “boy math” posts do reference actual math, but most are just silly, and some have more of a saucy tone taking aim at problematic behaviors.

“Boy math is being 5’10 but rounding it up to 6’0,” one person wrote.

“girl maths is that buying something using a refund is basically free, boy maths is saying that 5’9 is 5’11 with shoes on which is basically 6’0,” someone chimed in.

“Boy math is being afraid of gold diggers when you only have 3 pairs of socks to your name,” another quipped.

“Boy math is when YOU cannot cook or clean but it’s the women who refuse to do it for you who are ‘lazy and dirty,'” said another.

“Boy math is claiming women aren’t funny or creative but hopping on every f–king trend we do for ourselves and then whining when you don’t get it,” one tweet said, referencing the girl math trend.

“Boy math is waiting until her 18th birthday, and thinking that doesn’t make you a pedophile,” someone snapped of a more problematic scenario.

Similarly, another mentioned age gaps, writing, “Boy math is thinking being 27 with an 18 yr old gf is okay.”

“boy math is being 6 times more likely to abandon their wives with terminal or chronic illness and then crying about male loneliness,” a tweet read.

“boy math is spending $100 on fanduel and winning $0,” someone pointed out.

“Boy math is only having 1 pot, pan, spoon, fork, cup and plate and asking her when she going to come cook for you,” a person said.

“Boy math is wanting 0 kids, but having 0 condoms on hand,” one mocked.

“boy math is treating women like s–t but then getting mad when she tells people u treated her like s–t. another wrote.

“Boy math is paying $44 billion for a $25 billion company and, through business smarts and entrepreneurial know how, turning it into an $8.8 billion company,” one person tweeted, an apparent nod to X owner Elon Musk.

While it may seem like the rise of both girl and boy math is just a bunch of bickering, social media users are thoroughly enjoying the entertainment.

“This girl math vs boy math thing will go down in the history books as proof that women are literally so much funnier than men,” one person concluded.
