A 10-year-old boy was shot and killed while watching TV with his best friend inside his family’s Virginia home earlier this month in what police have called an act of senseless gun violence.
K’Von Morgan was struck by stray bullets while sitting on his bed watching television with his best friend, according to a GoFundMe set up last week by the slain fifth grader’s family.
“It makes no sense that a child had to lose his life by being inside his bedroom, doing what he was doing, and preparing to go to bed for the night. It’s ridiculous,” Petersburg Police Chief Travis Christian said, according to NBC 12.
Morgan was shot by someone outside the Pecan Acres apartment complex in Petersburg — an area Christian described as a family neighborhood where children should be able to safely play — just before 1 a.m. on June 17, police said.
He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries, police said.
Police are now reviewing security footage and surveying the area trying to locate any individuals involved.
“We’re looking for those individuals, not only those who did it, but we’re really looking for the individuals who know what happened,” Christian said.
Morgan was not involved in the incident going on outside, Christian added.
Dozens of community members gathered outside the Pecan Acres Apartment complex on Wednesday in support of K’Von’s family, NBC 12 reported.
“Somebody is feeling guilty right now somebody,” Perry Morgan, K’Von’s dad, said. “I don’t even know how you’re sleeping right now.”
K’Von was a rising fifth grader at Pleasant Lane Elementary School, according to his obituary.
“My nephew [K’Von] did not deserve this by no means necessary,” his uncle, Corey Friar, wrote on GoFundMe. “He still had his whole life ahead of him [and] was the light in every dark room.”
“He was amazing, full of energy, always smiling regardless of the situation. He always had a smile,” his father said.
