Two hospitals in Boston welcomed the first babies born in 2024 — with three girls all born exactly at midnight on Jan. 1.
Margarita and Roberto, who live in the Dorchester neighborhood, rang in the new year by welcoming their daughter Selena at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She was born weighing 6 lbs., 5 oz., according to People.
It’s the third year in a row that one of the first babies of the year was born at Brigham.
Eileen and Andrew DeRoma, of Canton, also kicked off 2024 with the birth of their daughter Emily — their third child — at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Emily, who weighed 7 lbs., 15 oz., joins older sisters Haylee, 4, and Kelsey, 3.
The third baby girl born at the stroke of midnight was 6 lbs., 8 oz. Ophelia — to proud parents Min Li and Huaien Wang, of Quincy.
Boston hospitals take New Year’s babies seriously, with several centers — including Brigham and Beth Israel — keeping in close contact throughout the night to determine who will welcome the first newborn, People reported.
Just minutes later in Sacremento, two more bundles of joy came into the world at 12:02 a.m.
Baby boy Asher Bao Nguyen was born at UC Davis Medical Center in the California capital weighing 8 lbs., 7 oz., according to KCRA.
Deliliah Juarez was born at the same time over at Kaiser Permanente Roseville, the outlet reported. She weighed 8 lbs., 12 oz.
Outside of the US, the first baby born in South Korea was welcomed by parents who struggled with infertility, according to The Korea Herald.
Lee Ju-hong and Im A-yeon’s miracle son was born at Cha Gangnam Medical Center in Seoul.
“[Our baby’s birth] is even more special because we’ve been married since June, 2016, and had him through in vitro fertilization. We sincerely wish the best for all the couples with fertility issues across the country,” A-yeon told the paper.
