The body of a 19-year-old swimmer washed up on a Queens beach Friday night after NYPD units searched the water hoping to find him, cops said.
Police began canvassing the waters off Jacob Riis Park around 9:30 p.m. after a witness called cops about a swimmer going under the water and not coming up, an NYPD spokeswoman said.
The NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit, Harbor Unit and Technical Assistance Response Unit canvassed for the Brooklyn teen, but he washed up along the beach nearby, police said.
Police officers performed CPR in an attempt to revive him to no avail. The teen was taken to Coney Island Hospital where he died just before midnight.
No further details were immediately available, and his identity was not released.
The teen went swimming after lifeguards instructed people to get out of the water and left for the day, witnesses told CBS New York. The witnesses also said there were strong currents in the Rockaways.
The incident happened one day after a 15-year-old boy went missing in the water at Coney Island Beach and has still not been found, police said.
A 14-year-old who had been swimming with the teen Thursday was pulled out to safety.
