Another Yankees rival grew stronger.
The Blue Jays, acting quickly after shortstop Bo Bichette suffered a knee injury Monday, acquired Paul DeJong from the Cardinals ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline, The Post’s Jon Heyman reported.
Toronto reportedly was sending righty Matt Svanson, who has a 1.11 ERA in 26 games out of the Low- and High-A bullpen this year, to St. Louis.
Bichette’s status is not clear after the All-Star came up lame rounding first during Monday night’s 4-2 loss to the Orioles.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters he would know more Tuesday.
If Bichette does miss time, DeJong would step in.
DeJong looked like a budding star when he debuted in 2017 and rose to an All-Star in 2019, when he hammered 30 home runs.
But his offense plunged from 2020-22, when he had a combined .631 OPS, and Tommy Edman began supplanting him at shortstop.
This year, Edman has largely moved around while DeJong has enjoyed a bounce-back season (.710 OPS with 13 home runs in 81 games).
The Blue Jays are in position for the third and final wild-card spot, 3 ½ games up on the Yankees, and are 6 ½ games back of the Orioles in the AL East.
With a few hours to go before the 6 p.m. deadline, the Yankees had not yet acted.
