NextImg:Blue Jays DFA struggling Paul DeJong 18 days after Cardinals trade

Paul DeJong is packing his bags again.

Eighteen days after he was traded to the Blue Jays from the Cardinals, DeJong was designated for assignment on Saturday as they activated Bo Bichette, the team announced.

The shortstop was picked up at the trade deadline for minor leaguer Matt Svanson to cover for Bichette, who was suffering from a knee injury, but his arrival in Toronto did not yield great results.

During his time with the Cardinals this season, DeJong had a .233 average and .710 OPS with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs in 81 games.

But in the 13 games with the Blue Jays, he hit a dismal .068 after going 3-for-44 with one RBI and no extra-base hits.

His nine years of experience and .721 career OPS could potentially make other teams interested, especially if they need someone to play up the middle.

DeJong, 30, was drafted by the Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft.

While with St. Louis, he finished as the runner-up to Cody Bellinger in 2017 for the Rookie of the Year award after he hit his career-high .285 with 25 long balls.

He earned an All-Star nod in 2019 when he hit .233 with a .762 OPS, piling up 30 homers and 78 RBIs.

Over his career, he’s mashed 115 round trippers.
