Blue Jays pitcher Alek Manoah has not pitched in a month and could very well be done for the season.
Manoah, 25, did not report to Triple-A Buffalo after he was optioned on Aug. 11 and instead remained in Toronto for two weeks, Sportsnet first reported.
The right-hander underwent physical testing to make sure he was healthy before heading to Buffalo, but he then had further testing done last week at his request, per The Athletic.
The struggling pitcher met with multiple specialists to get a sense of the wear and tear on his knee, back and right quad, and no structural damage was found, Sportsnet reported.
Manoah has not pitched from a mound in a month, and with only two weeks left in the Triple-A season, ramping back up to game shape appears unlikely at this point.
Per The Athletic, Toronto is operating under the assumption that Manoah will not be available for the rest of the year, even if the team needs another pitcher in case of injury.
Manoah’s season has been far from what he or the Blue Jays likely envisioned.
Manoah, an All-Star in 2022, has gone 3-9 in 19 starts with a 5.87 ERA this season at the big league level.
The Aug. 11 option was his second demotion to the minors this year after he was sent to the rookie-level Florida Complex League in June.
Blue Jays radio voice Ben Wagner told Sportsnet590 that Manoah had been unhappy with the decision.
The point of contention, Wagner said on the “Blair & Barker” show, was that the demotion was “performance-related”
“It was clear that this was not going to be a direction both parties were going to agree on,” Wagner said. “And that’s why there was such a gap between Alek being optioned, failing to report to Triple-A Buffalo, and then eventually working things out.”
Manoah came into the year with plenty of expectations.
In 2022, he had a 2.24 ERA in 196 ⅔ innings and finished third in American League Cy Young award voting.
