If you didn’t get a chance to catch Blue Beetle in theaters, then today is your lucky day, because the latest superhero film from D.C. is coming to digital platforms tomorrow. (OK, fine, I guess technically tomorrow is your lucky day.)
Based on the comic book character of the same name, Blue Beetle tells the story of a young graduate, Jaime Reyes, who returns home from law school and discovers his family is facing eviction. Thankfully, Jaime gets a job working for a rich CEO and happens upon a scarab from an alien civilization that gives him super powers, in the form of an exoskeleton suit that looks like a beetle. Hence, Blue Beetle.
Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, with a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Blue Beetle stars Xolo Maridueña (Parenthood, Cobra Kai) in the leading role, and features Bruna Marquezine, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez in the supporting cast. If you can’t wait to watch the film at home, read on to find out how to watch the Blue Beetle movie at home, and when to expect Blue Beetle to be streaming on Max.
Beginning on Tuesday, September 26 Blue Beetle will be available to buy and rent digitally on Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie costs $24.99 to pre-order to buy. You will also be able to rent the film for a 48-hour viewing window at the suggested price point of $19.99. (Though, again, this price may vary by platform.)
The Blue Beetle digital release will include bonus content, including a four-part documentary on the journey of the film from comic book to screen, a featurette on Nana, and a walk-through hosted by Xolo Maridueña that showcases how the scarab works.
Blue Beetle will also be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 31.
Blue Beetle will likely be on Max before Thanksgiving of this year, because it is a Warner Bros. movie, and Max is the streaming service owned by Warner Bros. All of the new WB theatrical movies end up streaming on Max, though the wait period has varied by title. The Flash, for example, was released on PVOD about five weeks after opening in theaters and began streaming on Max about five weeks after it was released on PVOD.
If Blue Beetle follows a similar release strategy as The Flash—which seems likely, given that both are DC superhero films that underperformed at the box office and were pushed to digital just five weeks after opening in theaters—you can expect to see Blue Beetle on Max around the first week of November.
That said, this is all speculation. There is not yet an official Blue Beetle Max release date. If you want to watch the Blue Beetle movie right away, you can buy or rent the movie online tomorrow.
