Netflix‘s Bling Empire, which premiered in 2021, became popular enough to earn a spin-off, Bling Empire: New York, but the show’s formula of wealthy, glamorous types who constantly stir up drama was short-lived: the original series was canceled after three seasons.

One of the show’s stars, Leah Qin, a 26-year-old real estate investor, has explained that she thinks the show’s cancellation was the result of several factors, but primarily that it consisted of “fake, made-up drama”and that she feels the show “perpetuated Asian stereotypes.”

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Qin said, “Bling Empire only showed the glamour and perpetuated Asian stereotypes. This was not reality,” adding, “Asian Americans are amazing. Instead of the glamour and fake made-up drama, I think audiences would love to see a show about how we got to there.”

Qin continued, “I grew up without money, we put a lot of sweat and effort to get where we are today. I would have loved to see a part of this. To me it is unfortunate because there were a lot of meaningful conversations that we had when we filmed. I enjoyed filming but how it showed up on TV was out of our control. People edited it so much that it was completely twisted.”

The reality star acknowledged that while fans liked Season 1 of the show, the quality, in her opinion, dropped off in Seasons 2 and 3. She said, “I am not surprised at all that the show was not renewed.”

Describing her experience on the show as a “learning process,” Qin also discussed her former co-star, Anna Shay, who died last week of a stroke.

“Anna passing made me realize that your health and your happiness are the most important things ever,” Qin said.
