Following months of speculation, Netflix has finally unveiled a roster of high-profile celebrities joining Black Mirror Season 6 — plus, the streaming giant confirmed that the hit anthology series will return this June.
In the one minute and 30-second trailer for Black Mirror’s sixth installment — which is described as the “most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected” season yet — we get a glimpse at the star-studded cast which includes Aaron Paul, Anjana Vasan, Annie Murphy, Clara Rugaard, Rory Culkin, Josh Hartnett, Kate Mara, Myha’la Herrold, Paapa Essiedu, Rob Delaney, Salma Hayek Pinault, Samuel Blenkin and Zazie Beetz.
Between a maniac version of Murphy dressed as a cheerleader and another character getting her head bashed through a glass case, it’s clear that this season will have more violence than ever before. The trailer appropriately ends with someone asking, “What the fuck is this? How the fuck is this?”
While speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, Charlie Booker, the show’s creator, executive producer and writer, opened up about what fans can expect.
“I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people — and myself — or else what’s the point?” Booker said. “It should be a series that can’t be easily defined, and can keep reinventing itself.”
He added, “Alongside some of the more familiar Black Mirror tropes we’ve also got a few new elements, including some I’ve previously sworn blind the show would never do, to stretch the parameters of what ‘a Black Mirror episode’ even is. The stories are all still tonally Black Mirror through-and-through — but with some crazy swings and more variety than ever before.”
Black Mirror first premiered on network television in the U.K. in 2011 before it was bought by Netflix in 2015. The anthology series presents different stories in each individual episode, which explores “a twisted, high-tech near-future where humanity’s greatest innovations and darkest instincts collide,” per the streaming platform’s description.
The show’s most recent season — which featured big names like Miley Cyrus, Anthony Mackie and Topher Grace — premiered in 2019, so it’s been just about four years since we’ve gotten new Black Mirror content.
While an official release date for Black Mirror Season 6 has not yet been announced, it is set to come to Netflix this upcoming June. Check out the full trailer above.
