The team behind Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) and Berlin are back with yet another takedown of the ultra-wealthy in their new Netflix drama, Billionaires’ Bunker.
Hailing from former Money Heist creator Alex Pina, Billionaires’ Bunker follows two families who are forced to isolate together away from an unprecedented global conflict that could bring on the apocalypse.
Netflix released the first official trailer of the thrilling dramedy which seems to combine all of the signature aspects the team’s previous Spanish hits: Outcasts, an unfathomable amount of wealth, and a hint of forbidden romance.
The trailer gives viewers their first glimpse at Max, played by Pau Simón, who is in prison for a mysterious crime until his father gets him released so that he can join him in the Kimera Underground Park due to the imminent threat of World War III.
There, we learn that Max and his family “are among the privileged few who will have the chance to survive in a safe space in the event of a cataclysm,” according to the mysterious leader Minerva (Miren Ibarguren.)
But Max and his family aren’t the only ones taking refuge in the bunker. He is immediately met with contempt by the others, hinting that a tragic car accident from his past may have left these families’ fates intertwined forever. But there’s no ignoring his spark with Asia (Alicia Falcó) who presses him on the most revealing question of all: “How does someone run away, leaving his dying girlfriend behind?”
The residents of Kimera Underground Park may have everything they need down there – cocktail bars, a basketball court, a psychologist, a spa and more – but there’s no escaping the conflict unfolding above them. They will watch on screens as the world above them collapses into chaos, punctuated by mushroom clouds and blaring headlines in the bunker.
“Their ancient privilege will be reduced to a life adapted to a luxurious hole, an underground universe full of enigmas where a wound from the past will explode between two conflicting families,” reads Netflix’s summary of the show.
But Max seems most impacted by being forced to reunite with his family. “Being with my family again has been devastating,” he admits in the trailer.
Billionaires’ Bunker was co-written by Pina and fellow former Money Heist writers David Barrocal and Esther Martínez Lobato. Lobato co-created the new series with Pina.
Money Heist became an international fan-favorite after it premiered on Netflix in 2017. It spawned two spin-offs, Money Heist: Korea and Berlin, and was became so popular Netflix chronicled the cultural sensation in the 2020 documentary Money Heist: The Phenomenon.
All 8 episodes of Billionaires’ Bunker will be available to stream Friday, Sept. 19.
