Last night on HBO‘s Real Time with Bill Maher, the host went after U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland for seemingly always being soft on Donald Trump but tough on Joe Biden and the Democrats who appointed him in the first place.
Maher opened his “New Rules” segment, which you can watch above, with a message to Democrats: “Giving a guy a job because he got screwed over for another job is not a good reason to give a guy a job.”
His main concern with “genial” Garland at the helm at this point, with Trump standing trial for hush money and election interference, is that “we need a tough AG to catch a real criminal.”
Garland was former President Barack Obama‘s pick for the Supreme Court in 2016 to replace Antonin Scalia but Mitch McConnell didn’t allow it to go through, and Maher claims the Democrats hired him as AG as payback.
Maher likened Garland to all the Republican special counsels that the Democrats have appointed in recent years in an attempt to appear nonpartisan, including Robert Mueller, Robert Fiske, David Weiss, and Robert Hur.
“The problem with this case isn’t that Trump isn’t guilty, it’s that it’s being tried in the wrong court,” he said. “If Garland had done his job, Trump would be in federal court charged with breaking campaign finance laws instead of state court and being charged with falsifying business records.”
He then shifted his rant to the classified documents cases, where a Republican was “instantly” appointed to Biden’s case for “optics” but for Trump, “it took 20 months” to appoint a special counsel.
“I know liberals like drag, but maybe don’t do it with the justice system,” he quipped.
Maher says good luck getting a verdict on Trump’s hush money trial before the election, which “59 percent of Americans” want, because “Merrick Garland is just so slow.”
