Bill Belichick is onto the Colts — even as the elephant in the room gets harder to ignore.
During an appearance Monday on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show,” Belichick was asked to reflect on the Patriots’ latest disappointment — a 20-17 loss to the Commanders on Sunday — which featured a now-viral moment of team owner Robert Kraft conversing with his son, Jonathan Kraft, who appeared to say of the team, “We’re not good enough.”
“You have to ask them about what they said,” Belichick responded. “We didn’t do enough yesterday.”
The Patriots haven’t done enough all season, with the team dropping to 2-7 on the year as Belichick’s future continues to be called into question.
Prior to Sunday’s defeat at home, The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin suggested the eight-time Super Bowl winner could be coaching for his job ahead of the bye week.
“These next two games before the bye are huge, particularly the Germany game, which is practically the team’s Super Bowl for the Krafts,” Volin wrote.
“If Belichick loses at home to the Commanders and then to the Colts, and comes home from Germany with a 2-8 record, I think there’s a chance the Krafts could make the move in the bye week and install [linebackers coach] Jerod Mayo as the interim coach for the final seven games.”
Despite the apparent first strike with the loss to the Commanders, Belichick said Monday he’s going “to do the best I can to help the team” as they prepare for their Week 10 clash against the Colts in Frankfurt, Germany, on Sunday.
“I do the best I can every week and I’m going to keep on doing that and do it again this week against Indianapolis, get through the game today and move on to Indy,” he said.
“Obviously, we all have to do a better job and work hard to do the best I can to help the team.”
Should the Patriots ever decide to move on from Belichick — who reportedly signed a “lucrative” contract extension earlier this year. — it’s been speculated the team already has a “home run” hire in mind.
“Two sources close to the Patriots have independently said the same thing: They believe [Mike] Vrabel, currently the Titans’ coach, is the Krafts’ ‘home run’ choice to succeed Belichick,” Volin reported Friday.
Vrabel, a former Patriots linebacker, was part of three Super Bowl-winning rosters in New England.
The Titans are 3-5 this season in what’s Vrabel’s sixth year in Tennessee.
