NextImg:Bill Belichick-Commanders trade ‘chatter’ circulating: Mike Florio

Mike Florio was in the mood to spill the tea on some rumors on Wednesday.

In an appearance on the “Rich Eisen Show,” the ProFootballTalk founder was having a relatively boilerplate conversation about the Commanders trading away pass rushers Chase Young and Montez Sweat, and mentioned that typically new owners such as Josh Harris want to get their own regimes in place, and the only way to prevent that inevitability is to win games.

That’s when Florio casually dropped that extra draft picks could make the Commanders a more attractive destination to whomever Harris hires next, saying, “There’s some rumors out there on the grapevine, there’s some theories out there about potential candidates to take over the team, possibly a coach who we think is going to get fired by the Patriots but might be traded by the Patriots to the Commanders when the season is over. Who knows?”

Eisen followed up and asked Florio to explain more about what he just said.

“There’s a little chatter out there about a possible trade of Bill Belichick,” Florio said, elaborating that the Commanders would call the Patriots after the season and ask about compensation if Belichick, who’s won six Super Bowls in New England, wanted to be their next head coach.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported last month that the 71-year-old Belichick — who had been thought to be on the hot seat as the team seems likely to miss the playoffs for a second straight year — just signed a multi-year contract extension with the Patriots this past offseason.

Details on the contract extension were sparse, but it was said to be “lucrative.”

Florio told Eisen that he initially thought this report came from Belichick’s camp to signal that he wasn’t getting fired in the middle of the season but that perhaps it came from Patriots brass to show that anyone who wanted to hire him in the future would also have to go through them.

The Patriots fell to 2-6 with their loss to the Dolphins last Sunday and, coincidentally, host the Commanders (3-5) this Sunday.
