President Biden confided to his supporters late Tuesday that he wanted to climb a large oak tree, hours after he slipped while walking down the stairs of Air Force One.
Biden, 80, made the bizarre remark during a private fundraiser at the Atherton, Calif. home of billionaire philanthropists Mark Heising and Liz Simons, according to a pool report.
The president “joked that he wanted to climb on the large tree growing in the middle of the courtyard,” according to USA Today reporter Michael Collins.
The tree in question was a 100-year-old oak, NBC Bay Area reported.
Biden then went on rail against political violence and maintain he was the best candidate to once again defeat Donald Trump in 2024 and “save our democracy,” according to Collins.
The White House does not permit audio recording of Biden’s remarks at fundraisers and an official transcript was not available as of Wednesday afternoon.
Tuesday’s event was not the first time Biden had raised eyebrows in front of donors. Last week, the president repeated part of his fundraising pitch almost word-for-word during a Manhattan reception, raising concerns about his advanced age.
Earlier Tuesday, Biden was filmed catching himself just in time to avoid a nasty fall after slipping while deplaning from the presidential je6t at the Detroit airport, where he had flown to join striking auto workers.
That morning, Axios had revealed that the octogenarian was working with a trainer to improve his balance and agility amid widespread concerns that he is too old to serve a second term — an opinion held by nearly three-quarters of American voters and two-thirds of Democrats, according to polls.
Biden has been often seen wearing tennis shoes instead of slippery dress shoes since he tumbled over a sandbag after delivering the commencement speech at the US Air Force Academy in June.
A shorter flight of stairs on Air Force One has also been deployed to guard against the risk of further falls.
Last March, Biden tripped three times and ultimately fell to his knees while going up the long staircase to the flight deck.
This past February, he tripped up the stairs and fell forward while boarding the aircraft in Poland.
Biden’s balance issues are likely worsened by what his doctor has diagnosed as arthritis in his spine and foot, according to Axios’ Tuesday report.
