The Biden administration is readying for possible retaliation from Iran in response to an Israeli strike Monday on the Islamic Republic’s consulate in Syria, according to multiple reports.

Senior US officials believe that within the next week Iran could direct an attack on Israeli or American assets in the Middle East, according to CNN

“We’re definitely at a high state of vigilance,” one US official said Friday, according to Reuters.

Another official told CNN that retaliation from Iran is being viewed as “inevitable” and could be “significant.”

Seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members, including two top commanders, were killed in Monday’s airstrike in the Syrian capital of Damascus.

The US believes the strike against Tehran’s embassy complex in Syria was launched by Israel, but the Jewish state has not confirmed that it was responsible.

Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have vowed revenge.

President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed Iran’s public threats against Israel in a phone call on Thursday, where the 81-year-old president made clear that the US will strongly support the Jewish state in the face of Iranian threats, according to a readout of the call.

“There was discussion between the two leaders about the very viable and quite public threat Iran is making to Israel’s security in the last day or so, and the president made very clear — very clear — to Prime Minister Netanyahu that he can count on U.S. support to help them in their self-defense against threats directly and publicly posed by Iran,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Friday.

A direct attack on Israel by Iran could escalate the current conflict between Hamas and Israel.

Iranian-back militant groups have targeted US troops in the region via drone strikes more than 100 times since Israel’s declaration of war against Hamas, leading to several US-led airstrikes on militant group outposts in Syria and Iraq.
