Max Fried’s first start as a Yankee was underwhelming at best. 

But the southpaw has about as good a shot as any at a bounce back in Pittsburgh on Friday. 

The Pirates have been atrocious at the plate through seven games, hitting .197/.291/.278 with just four home runs and a 64 wRC+, which is fourth-worst in baseball.

Those games came against the Marlins and Rays, who are hardly the best pitching teams in the league. 

When the Pirates have had success on offense, it’s been on the bases – through Wednesday, the Pirates led the majors in stolen bases (19).

Fried just happens to be one of the best at holding runners on – no pitcher has more pickoffs (23) than him since 2019. 

Fried was uncharacteristically wild in his Bronx Bombers debut, walking two and getting a bit unlucky with two hit batters in 4 ⅔ innings.
