The Minnesota Twins will start Sonny Gray in the rubber match against Matthew Liberatore and the St. Louis Cardinals tonight in the Twin Cities.

BetMGM has the total for this game set at nine runs and I think that’s a little low. I don’t trust Liberatore to pitch well tonight and the Cardinals should be able to muster some runs against Minnesota’s pitching staff.

Liberatore has had a front row seat on the struggle bus this season. The lefty comes in with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP, and in his most recent MLB start on July 5 against the Marlins, he only managed one out while giving up four earned runs. That was cause for St. Louis to send him down to Triple-A Memphis for about a month. Now that he’s back, I expect the Twins to rough him up like other teams have done.

The Cardinals’ pitching has been underwhelming this season, but that can’t be said about their lineup. St. Louis ranks highly with a .256 team batting average (8th in MLB), a .761 team OPS (7th in MLB), and its 512 runs scored is 12th-best in baseball. That presents a tough challenge for Gray, who has pitched well in 2023 with a 3.22 ERA, 115 strikeouts, and a 1.27 WHIP.
