The Padres return to San Diego for the first time after the All-Star Break for a matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
With Yu Darvish starting for the Padres, BetMGM favors San Diego by 1.5 runs and I like that line for the brown and gold. The Padres are playing well after winning four of their past six games and I think rookie Pittsburgh pitcher Quinn Priester will struggle again in his second start.
Darvish is having another solid season and enters tonight’s game with a 4.36 ERA, 105 strikeouts, and a 1.26 WHIP. He’s been at his best in July, giving up four total earned runs in three starts over 17 innings. Furthermore, San Diego should be able to support him at the plate, since Manny Machado has been red-hot in July with a .300 batting average, a 1.145 OPS, and 10 home runs, while Juan Soto is chipping in with a .909 OPS this month.
If those sluggers keep seeing the ball well, that should be bad news for Priester. The 22-year-old right-hander was awful in his MLB debut when he gave up seven earned runs to the Cleveland Guardians in an 11-0 loss last Monday. It’s fair to expect Priester to be a little better in his second start tonight, but the Padres should still be able to have some success against him.
