As a Cy Young contender in 2022, Alek Manoah’s 2023 campaign has been disappointing, making it challenging to support him in his upcoming start for the Toronto Blue Jays against Reid Detmers and the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.

While Detmers hasn’t been exceptional as a starter, he has managed to pitch five-plus innings in most of his outings, unlike Manoah, who has struggled to find the strike zone.

If Detmers can pitch deeper into the game, it will alleviate the strain on the Angels’ weaker-than-average bullpen, making their bats comparable to the Blue Jays’, especially with Manoah on the mound.

In terms of metrics, Detmers ranks better than Manoah, placing in the 19th percentile in average exit velocity and the 24th percentile in hard-hit rate. He also boasts a 29.4% strikeout rate and an 8.9% walk rate, which shows his ability to miss bats when needed.

Comparing their ERA and xERA, Detmers’ 4.38 xERA and 4.12 ERA are more favorable compared to Manoah’s numbers. The Angels have also performed well off right-handed pitchers in July, carrying a 110 wRC+, .777 OPS, and 9.1% walk rate, with six bats exceeding a .330 xwOBA, encompassing the majority of their lineup.

Manoah, on the other hand, exhibits weaknesses in his average exit velocity and hard-hit rate, ranking in the 36th and 21st percentiles, respectively. His low 17.9% strikeout rate and high 14.7% walk rate raise concerns about his pitching performance.

While Manoah had a decent outing against the Tigers after returning from AAA, subsequent games against the Padres and Mariners saw him struggle with multiple walks and few strikeouts, indicating little improvement after his stint in AAA.

Considering these factors, taking the Angels with a similar lineup seems reasonable. As long as Detmers can limit hard contact, there should be value on the moneyline at -110.
