It’s a battle of No. 1 picks Wednesday in San Antonio when the Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs host LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Los Angeles is favored by 1.5 points on the road, and frankly I’m surprised that spread isn’t larger given the quality of these teams.
Sure, the Lakers played Tuesday night, but they should still be expected to win against the Spurs.
Prior to its loss to the Mavericks on Tuesday, L.A. had won four straight over quality teams (Rockets, Suns, Pelicans, Pacers).
The 14-10 Lakers look like a true Western Conference contender, and LeBron James is playing as good as ever, averaging 25.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game, all while shooting 55.1% from the floor.
With Anthony Davis pulling in a double-double most nights (23.3 PPG & 12.6 RPG), Los Angeles is tough to deal with.
Meanwhile, the Spurs are in a rough spot after losing 17 consecutive games.
They give up the fourth-most amount of points per night and the overall talent just isn’t there, other than Wembanyama. The French phenom already leads the NBA with 2.8 blocks per game, while also recording 18.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.
The only reason to fade the Lakers is because they are on the second night of a back-to-back, but they didn’t have to travel far and are the superior team anyway.
