A list of the best hospitals in the world has been published — and New York takes a brutal beating in the vaunted rankings.
Newsweek’s recently discharged global roundup identifies the top 250 health systems across the globe, based on factors including patient satisfaction and expert opinions, according to the publication.
The list is mostly content to stick to stick out its tongue depressor at the Big Apple.
Gotham’s get-well palaces were nowhere to be found in the Top 10, with Mount Sinai our best local performer at No. 20 worldwide. New York Presbyterian — Columbia and Cornell comes at No. 55, and NYU-Langone at 89.
Specific criteria came from opinions of 85,000 medical professionals, along with data taken from surveys of individuals who had been released from care. Other factors at hand included hygiene and doctor to patient ratios.
Also taken into consideration was whether medical centers used standard questionnaires — called Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) — as a meter of internal assessment.
And while the Tri-State area may have underperformed in the rankings this year, the United States dominated, with four of the top five hospitals located right here at home.
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. was named number one in the world, followed at two by Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic.
Johns Hopkins in Baltimore took number four, wile Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston slid into the number five spot. The only non-American hospital in the top five was Toronto General, just over the border in Canada, sitting pretty at number three.
The rest of the top ten belonged pretty much to Europe’s best —Germany’s Charité Universitätsmedizin in Berlin at six, Sweden’s Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset in Stockholm at seven, and Paris’ AP-HP – Hôpital Universitaire Pitié Salpêtrière right behind at eight.
The United Kingdom clawed its way into the rankings all the way down at No. 36, with St. Thomas Hospital of London taking the honors.
Newsweek noted that the nations of Chile and Malaysia both made the list for the first time, with Clínica Alemana Vitacura and Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur repping their respective countries.
