Ben Affleck used his Super Bowl commercial for Dunkin’ Donuts to address the rumors that he was “bored” at the Grammys in 2023, after photos circulated of him looking exhausted beside his wife, performer Jennifer Lopez.
According to the Oscar-winning actor and director, he wasn’t bored. He was “locked in.”
A bizarre extended cut of the Dunkin’ Donuts commercial has been released, clocking in at a little over four minutes. It chronicles Affleck’s journey to launching his own music career — even though his wife wants nothing to do with it.
The commercial begins with Affleck on the phone with Lopez.
“I had this crazy dream, you’re gonna laugh. I had come up with some beats and some rhythms and you were like, ‘That’s dope I love that! That’s amazing! That’s like a whole new sound, maybe I should put that on the record,” he tells her. “I even had a persona like J.Lo, or like B.Lo. That’s the bad version, obviously. Do you have some time today if I wanted to squeeze by [the studio]?” But by the dejected look on his face, it looks like she shut him down.
With a tortured look in his eye, Affleck puts on his best Boston accent to express just how much he wants this. “Jen, you know, not the only one with a dream. Not the only one with an identity, and a self expression, and a truth,” he says.
It’s so easy to get entranced in Affleck’s bizarre journey that you almost forget it’s a Dunkin’ Donuts ad.
The commercial then shows Affleck working with a reluctant music producer as well as TikTok star Charli D’Amelio, who attempts to teach him some dance moves.
“They tell you you’re no good, you’re a goofy, middle-aged, clumsy white guy with no rhythm and you can’t sing on key,” Affleck rants to himself. “You’re not coordinated. That means I can’t be a pop star? Underestimate Boston, at your peril.”
What happens next is almost painful to watch. Affleck crashes Lopez’s studio session with the help of Tom Brady and an embarrassed Matt Damon, who seems mortified by the matching Dunkin’ Donuts outfits.
“Sometimes it’s really hard to be your friend, man,” Damon says.
Unfortunately for Affleck, Lopez isn’t buying it. “You’re biased. You’re blinded by them pinstripes,” he declares, referring to the New York Yankees and Lopez’s Bronx roots.
It looks like that could be the end of the DunKings as we know it.
