NextImg:Bears GM Ryan Poles tries to put out fire after Alan Williams resigns

Bears general manager Ryan Poles spoke Thursday following a dizzying 24 hours for the franchise that included the resignation of defensive coordinator Alan Williams and erroneous reports that Halas Hall was raided.

“I don’t have many details to add there. Halas Hall being raided is completely false. Don’t know where that came from,” Poles told reporters.

“We’ve worked with [team president] Kevin [Warren] and [team chairman] George [McCaskey] and all our leadership to make sure we were handling it the right way, and everything concluded yesterday.”

Prior to Williams stepping down, rumors ran rampant online that the FBI had raided his home and Halas Hall.

Williams’ personal attorney, Andrew M. Stroth, said the rumors are “one hundred percent untrue.”

“The rumors on social media are offensive and one hundred percent untrue,” Stroth said, per NBC. “Coach Williams resigned (Wednesday) because of personal health challenges and personal family issues. There was no raid on Halas Hall, and no raid on his home.”

Williams, who had stepped away from the team last week, said in a statement Wednesday he is taking time “to take care of my health and family.”

“I appreciate the opportunity to work with the Chicago Bears, a storied NFL franchise with a rich history,” Williams said in a statement, according to ESPN.

Reporters around the team, though, have cast doubt on that explanation.

The internal tumult didn’t end there, however.

Quarterback Justin Fields raised eyebrows Wednesday over comments made about his “robotic” play, appearing to suggest a disconnect with personnel.

“Of course, things that I didn’t like, I felt like I wasn’t necessarily playing my game. I felt like I was kind of robotic and not playing like myself,” Fields said.

“My goal this week is just to say ‘Eff it’ and play football how I know how to play football. That includes thinking less and just going out there and playing off of instincts, rather than just so much info and data in my head and just going out there and playing football.”

When asked what he felt was the root of the overthinking, Fields replied: “Could be coaching, I think, but at the end of the day they’re doing their job when they’re giving me what to look at, but at the end of the day I can’t be thinking about that when the game comes.”

Fields later stated how his remarks were taken out of context.

The 0-2 Bears will visit the reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs on Sunday, with head coach Matt Eberflus expected to take on the defensive play-calling.
