Warner Bros. Discovery is eyeing its next home run. The company has set out to feature the Major League (MLB) playoffs, which begin on Oct. 3, as part of the debut of Max‘s brand new sports streaming tier.

According to CNBC, the media and entertainment company’s game plan involves live streaming games from the following: the MLB, National Basketball Association (NBA), National Hockey League (NHL), and National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) on Max. The latter even may include the coveted March Madness tournament.

Content from Bleacher Report, a sports site acquired by Warner Bros. Discovery in 2012, would also be incorporated into the new tier, which will likely be branded under the same name.

The only sports games aired on Max up to this point have been soccer games, including coverage of both the US Men’s and Women’s National Teams, per Front Office Sports.

Although price points have yet to be solidified for this new sports streaming subscription, discussions during last week’s second-quarter earnings conference call hinted at a potential price jump for the sports tier; CEO David Zaslav said that interested subscribers would “hear from [them] on that soon.”

Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games JB Perrette argued for the new tier’s potential value, explaining that “[their] view is sports is a such a premium offering with a very focused and passionate fan base that generally … it needs to be monetized incrementally.”

While no MLB games would air exclusively on Max, there are talks for games to be simulcast on both Max and TBS, individuals with knowledge of the discussions told CNBC.

As for the NBA, negotiations are being made for basketball games to be simulcast on Max and TNT. CNBC noted that the NBA has an “exclusive window to negotiate new TV rights” that ends in April 2024 with broadcast partners Disney+ and Warner Bros. Discovery.

However, sources noted to CNBC that if Max were to gain access to exclusive NBA games, the earliest that they would start streaming would be at the beginning of 2024 and would “likely be a part of the NBA’s rights renewal agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery.”
