Barbie (2023)

If you were expecting to say “hi” to Barbie on streaming today, bad news: The Barbie digital release date has been pushed back a week, to Tuesday, September 12. You’ll have to wait another week if you want to feel the Kenergy from the comfort of your own home.

Though the date was never officially announced by Warner Bros., digital retailers were expecting to see Barbie on “premium” video-on-demand—which is the industry term for charging movie theater prices for an earlier release on digital platforms like Amazon Prime Video—today, September 5. That date was reported by Variety and other trades (as well as at Decider), based on tip-offs from digital retailers like Amazon Prime.

But there were rumblings that the date may be pushed back a week. A quick look at the landing page to purchase Barbie on Amazon Prime confirms that the new Barbie digital release date is Tuesday, September 12, at 12 a.m. Eastern Time. The Apple TV+ landing page for Barbie also lists the release date as September 12 but did not specify a release time. The film is available to pre-order for $29.99.

Again, this date has not been officially announced by Warner Bros. Decider reached out to Warner Bros. for confirmation that September 12 is the official Barbie digital release date, but did not hear back before the time of publication. That said, it’s likely safe to assume that September 12 will be the digital release date. A Barbie DVD release date has not yet been announced.

You’ll still be able to see Barbie in theaters after the film releases on digital. You can even see it for one week in IMAX, beginning on September 22, complete with new, never-before-seen end-credits footage. Barbie has made over $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office to date, and the number just keeps climbing. Given that massive financial success, some folks may be surprised that Warner Bros. is pushing the film to digital less than two months after Barbie opened in theaters. But that’s more or less the new standard these days, with a few exceptions. Clearly, Warner Bros. thinks it can make a nice chunk of change off this digital release, while still also getting income from the box office.

Hey, as long as we get some Barbie bonus features, that will be Kenough.
