Baker Mayfield didn’t take Lions defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson’s little dig at him sitting down.
The Buccaneers quarterback responded Wednesday to Gardner-Johnson’s comment that Tampa’s wide receiver group would be a good group “if you give that Tampa group a good quarterback.”
Mayfield, 28, seemed to think that the defender hasn’t really studied the Bucs that closely.
“I don’t think he’s really watched film because he mentioned Russell Gage,” Mayfield said in response. “You know, we love Russell, but Russell hasn’t played a snap all year for us. He must be going off preseason stuff that the media was talking about.”
Gage has been out all year after he went down with a season-ending knee injury in August during a joint practice with the Jets.
Even without that target, Mayfield helped lead the Bucs to a lopsided win over the Eagles on Monday night, throwing for 337 yards and three touchdowns.
The QB also threw for 4,044 yards during the regular season, which was the first time in his six NFL seasons that he eclipsed the 4,000-yard mark in a single campaign.
Mayfield threw for 28 touchdowns — also a new career best for him — and finished 2023 with a 64.3 completion percentage.
The Bucs are slated to face the Lions on Sunday in the NFC divisional round, and Mayfield expressed excitement over getting to square off against Gardner-Johnson, 26, who missed their regular season showdown due to a torn pectoral muscle.
The Lions won that Oct. 15 game, 20-6.
“He didn’t play our first game so I’m excited to see him,” Mayfield said. “I think he’s a really good player. He has been for a while. He’s been an impactful guy on every team he’s been on.
“But yeah, he’s gotta do a little bit more film study.”

Tampa Bay will be making its third appearance in the divisional round in the last four years, but the Lions haven’t made it this far in the postseason since 1991, when they reached the conference championship and lost to Washington.
