NextImg:Astros release struggling José Abreu with over $30 million left on contract

After one-and-a-half seasons with the Astros, José Abreu is packing his bags — with plenty of money in them.

The first baseman was released Friday afternoon, the team announced.

Abreu is still owed more than $30 million on the free agent deal he signed last year with the Houston, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

In the nine seasons he spent with the Chicago White Sox prior to joining the Astros, Abreu won the AL MVP award in 2020 and notched three All-Star and Silver Slugger seasons.

He also earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2014.

However, he failed to bring the star power to the Astros.

Across 176 games, he held a .217 batting average and .625 OPS.

This season, he has a dismal .124 average and .361 OPS.

Abreu had just 14 hits in 113 at-bats this season while striking out 28 times, and he tallied two home runs and seven RBIs.
