Ashley Brewer refuses to be defined by a job.
The former “SportsCenter” anchor, who was part of ESPN’s latest round of layoffs last month, discussed the matter in a recent TikTok video, during which she responded to an internet troll.
“For now when you’re on your honeymoon, real world doesn’t exist once you get back home and you realize you have nowhere to go and reality sets in,” the user wrote in the comments of Brewer’s TikTok page.
Brewer — who’s on her honeymoon in Bora Bora after marrying NBA free-agent center Frank Kaminsky on July 7 — explained why she isn’t letting the layoff get her down in a separate TikTok video.
“I live by this quote: ‘Never let your happiness be determined by something you may lose,'” Brewer said.
“In life nothing is guaranteed. You can lose relationships, you can lose jobs, you can lose homes. My happiness will never be determined by a job or by being an ESPN ‘SportsCenter’ anchor. I have always felt like so much more than that.
“This job is never my identify. I enjoyed it. It was so much fun. I used to always say ‘it was the best job ever.’ But my life and my happiness, and say, depression, would not depend on losing a job.”
Brewer added she is thinking of her former colleagues during what’s been a challenging time.
“I pray to God that no one else that got laid off is depressed by this,” she said. “I pray that none of my followers are depressed when they lose a job because you are so much more important than a job and I know that. And I know when this job was taken away from me, that was God redirecting me towards something else.
“I appreciate all of the kind words, the support, you guys have been amazing. That’s all I will say about it. Thank you.”
In her caption, Brewer added: “Replying to @Stupid I know my videos about this have been sarcastic and poking fun at myself. Be here’s the serious answer. I am ok.
“Anyone going thru something similar will be ok. Man rejection is God’s redirection. And I truly appreciate all of your support and kindness. Thank you.”
Brewer has been candid about her honeymoon happenings, both the good and bad.
In a separate TikTok video, Brewer said she received news on her honeymoon that a family member passed away.
“When you lose ur job the week of your wedding..,” she wrote over a video of herself. “Then a family member passes away during ur honeymoon.”
In the wake of the sobering news, Brewer received support from fans, who not only offered their condolences but words of encouragement for her next chapter.
“Hang in there we are praying for you! You are going to get through this and something better will be coming soon!” one fan commented.
Another added, “I’m so sorry for what you are going through. You have an army of people here that will help get though this. We promise.”
Through it all, Kaminsky has remained Brewer’s biggest supporter.
The couple, who first connected in 2017, got married in a Los Angeles courthouse in April before this month’s destination wedding.
