Stunning surveillance footage appears to show Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert’s alleged burglary attempt at a Lincoln smoke shop.
Gilbert was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of burglary after police received a report of a store break-in at SJ’s Liquor and Vape Shop shortly before 2 a.m..
Video of the incident shows a man wearing a mask to cover his face and using what appeared to be a cement block to break the front door of the business.
Camera footage within the building showed what appeared to be the former five-star recruit out of Marietta, Georgia, kicking through a second door and then walking inside the store.
According to the police, Gilbert exited a store with a bag tat contained stolen vape products, Delta 8 (a psychoactive cannabinoid), cigars and lighters.
After rummaging through the store, Gilbert was allegedly shown walking through a hallway and toward the exit.
But before he could exit, what looked to be eight police officers were waiting for him at the door he had just broken in through.
A surprised Gilbert threw his hands up when he spotted police at the door before he was taken down and arrested.
The total value of the products in the bag came to $1,672.07.
Police reported that Gilbert also did about $650 in damage to the store.
Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said Tuesday that he was “obviously really disappointed, really sad” for Gilbert, who was booked in the Lancaster County jail on a burglary charge, which is a felony in Nebraska, per ESPN.
Gilbert, who had transferred from Georgia, has been waiting to see if he’s eligible to play this season.
After using a one-time transfer exception to go from LSU to Georgia, Gilbert would need a waiver from the NCAA to be able to play this season.
