Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blasted Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis after the rising GOP star defended Daniel Penny, the 24-year-old ex-marine facing manslaughter charges for the subway chokehold death of Jordan Neely.
DeSantis earlier in the week praised Penny for “doing the right thing,” since passengers on the train said they felt threatened by Neely, 30, who was homeless and mentally ill.
“Vets look out for other vets. What we can’t have in our society is inmates running the asylum,” he said, alluding to his own service in the US Navy.
DeSantis added that Penny was a “Good Samaritan.”
AOC took strong issue with the biblical allusion, since the parable of the Good Samaritan comes from the New Testament’s Gospel of Luke.
While leaving Neely’s funeral Friday and taking selfies with well-wishers, the congresswoman took a question from an unidentified reporter.
“AOC, what do you think about Governor DeSantis calling Penny a good Samaritan?” he asked.
“I think he should read a Bible,” she shot back before rolling up the tinted window of a black SUV.
The exchange was captured on video and swiftly went viral on social media.
