President Biden’s decision to resume building the border wall he was so strongly against is being ripped by his own party — with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez demanding he “reverse the course” and stop his “cruel policy.”
The New York Democrat fired off a statement Thursday taking the Biden Administration to task for waiving 26 federal laws to speed up the construction of new sections of the border wall in Texas in a bid to keep migrants out.
“The Biden administration was not required to expand construction of the border wall — and they certainly were not required to waive several environmental laws to expedite the building,” the Bronx and Queens lawmaker stated.
“The President needs to take responsibility for this decision and reverse the course.”
The progressive rep maintained that “a wall does nothing to deter people who are fleeing poverty and violence from coming to the United States.”
“Walls only serve to push migrants into more remote areas, increasing their chances of death. It is a cruel policy,” she continued.
The new sections of the barrier measuring 20 miles will go up along the southern border in Starr County, Texas, which has been a high-traffic entry point for migrants, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Some 245,000 people have illegally entered the US in that area this fiscal year alone.
Biden has previously condemned building a border wall, a pet project for former President Donald Trump, and tried to claim the decision to go back on that was out of his hands.
He said Thursday that he tried to get lawmakers to re-approaprite the Trump-era funding but Congress refused. The law requires the money to be used as approved and the construction to be completed this year.
“The money was appropriated for the border wall,” Biden said. “I can’t stop that.”
Ocasio-Cortez was among a number of Democrats challenging that ascertion, as she said it was about time the president “finally invest in meaningful immigration reform.”
Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) likened he Biden Administration’s decision to “sticking our heads in the sand.”
Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador also weighed in on the planned expansion of the border wall, calling it a “setback” he said “does not solve the problem.”
The move comes as it was announced Thursday that the US would also resume deporting migrants back to Venezuela in a desperate bid to slow down the influx of new arrivals inundating New York City, Chicago and Washington.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the decision to go ahead with the wall construction does not represent a change of policy.
“From day one, this administration has made clear that a border wall is not the answer,” he said in a statement. “That remains our position and our position has never wavered.”
Trump wasted no time taking a victory lap on social media, arguing that Biden’s actions proved he was right on the wall all along.
“As I have stated often, over thousands of years, there are only two things that have consistently worked, wheels, and walls!” he wrote on Truth Social. “Will Joe Biden apologize to me and America for taking so long to get moving … I will await his apology!”
